A forest fire in Paüls, Tarragona, has burned approximately 1,500 hectares, prompting the Generalitat of Catalonia to request assistance from the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (UME). The fire's containment was complicated by strong nighttime winds. Authorities imposed a confinement affecting 18,000 people in the Tarragona area, excluding the municipality of Paüls itself. The confinement was lifted and the emergency status deactivated by the Generalitat as firefighters reported progress aided by rainfall during the night, which stabilized the fire perimeter. Firefighters expressed confidence in controlling the fire by Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, a new fire was declared in a pasture area near Algeciras despite a drop in temperatures due to a DANA weather system. Spain is under various weather alerts, including an orange alert for storms and hail expected on July 12, affecting regions such as Aude, Pyrénées-Orientales, and Aragón, where the UME has been deployed following heavy rain warnings in Zaragoza's Ribera del Ebro. Additional measures include the use of livestock in Madrid to help prevent summer wildfires.
