A technical malfunction at the Milan radar control center caused a suspension of all flights in northwestern Italy on June 28, 2025, affecting airports including Milan Malpensa, Linate, Orio al Serio, Montichiari, Caselle, and Genoa. The disruption lasted for over an hour and a half, resulting in the cancellation, delay, or diversion of approximately 320 flights and impacting more than 60,000 passengers. Enav, Italy's air traffic controller, identified the issue as a connectivity failure linked to the telecommunications provider TIM, which disrupted radar data transmission. The problem was resolved by the early hours of June 29, with flight operations gradually returning to normal. An investigation into the causes of the radar failure has been initiated. Subsequently, severe weather conditions led to additional disruptions in the region. Heavy rains and landslides isolated the town of Cogne in the Aosta Valley by blocking the regional road. In Bardonecchia, Piedmont, the Frejus River overflowed, causing flooding and the death of a 70-year-old man. The flooding prompted a maximum alert and emergency responses. Further landslides in San Vito di Cadore, Veneto, resulted in the closure of State Road 51, complicating access to Cortina d'Ampezzo. Additionally, intense storms in the French Alps caused damage that forced the suspension of rail traffic between Paris and Milan for several days starting July 1, 2025. The rail interruption is due to flooding and landslides in the Maurienne valley near Modane, with cleanup operations ongoing. These events collectively disrupted transport infrastructure across northern Italy and adjacent regions.
