On August 10 and 11, 2025, Mexico City experienced intense rainfall accompanied by hail, leading to widespread flooding and disruptions across the capital. The storm triggered seismic activity due to a powerful lightning strike. Authorities activated multiple alert levels, including the highest, Purple Alert, in the Cuauhtémoc borough, with Red Alerts in Azcapotzalco, Cuauhtémoc, Miguel Hidalgo, and one other borough, Orange Alerts in five boroughs, and Yellow Alerts in another five. Flooding affected major thoroughfares such as Periférico Norte, Circuito Interior, Avenida Reforma, Boulevard Puerto Aéreo, Fray Servando Teresa de Mier, Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza, and Canal de Río Churubusco, causing vehicle immobilization and pedestrian hazards. Emergency services, including the SSC-CDMX, assisted affected residents and motorists. The Hospital General Balbuena also reported flooding, necessitating patient relocations. The storm caused operational disruptions in the city's public transportation and infrastructure. The Mexico City Metro's Line 2 experienced a short circuit and transformer explosion near San Antonio Abad station, resulting in temporary closure of the San Antonio Abad, Chabacano, and Viaducto stations. Metro service on Line 2 was limited to two segments: Cuatro Caminos to Pino Suárez and Tasqueña to Xola until the issue was resolved and full service was restored early on August 11. Additionally, Line A of the Metro suspended service from Pantitlán to La Paz starting 10:00 p.m. on August 10 for nighttime maintenance. The intense rainfall also forced the suspension of operations at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) for nearly four hours due to flooding and low visibility, affecting 104 flights and approximately 14,892 passengers. Flights were diverted to alternate airports, some as far as 800 miles away. Airport operations resumed before midnight on August 10. City officials, including Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum and Clara Brugada, head of the Cuauhtémoc borough, activated the "Tlaloque" emergency plan to address the storm's impact and urged residents to exercise caution and limit travel to essential trips only. Sheinbaum noted that the heaviest rainfall was recorded in the city center, particularly around the Zócalo, with 81 millimeters of precipitation. Authorities continue efforts to manage flooding and assist affected areas.
