Berlin’s regional court ruled on Wednesday that Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg must pay its former director-general Patricia Schlesinger around €18,400 in contractually agreed Ruhegeld for the month of January 2023. The judgment gives the ousted broadcaster chief a limited victory in her effort to secure ongoing pension-style payments withheld after her 2022 dismissal. At the same time, the court upheld parts of RBB’s counterclaims. Schlesinger was ordered to reimburse roughly €24,000 in disputed travel and vehicle expenses, and the judges found that the broadcaster’s broader demands for damages tied to a bonus programme and an ARD allowance—valued at about €1.7 million and €88,000 respectively—are in principle justified, with the exact sums to be determined later. A separate proceeding over the aborted Digital Media House project, in which RBB seeks €13.6 million, was split off for future hearings. The ruling is not yet final and can be appealed to the Berlin Kammergericht. Whether Schlesinger will pursue further Ruhegeld for the period since her dismissal, and how much she ultimately owes the publicly funded broadcaster, remain open as the protracted legal battle continues.
