Germany has invited heads of state and government from the European Union, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, senior European Commission officials and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to a virtual conference on Wednesday to discuss the war in Ukraine, a government spokesman said in Berlin. Immediately after that session, the same European participants and Zelenskiy are expected to join a joint call with U.S. President Donald Trump. Berlin said the two-step format is intended to allow European capitals to coordinate their stance before engaging with Washington. The consultations precede Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, a summit that has prompted Kyiv and several EU governments to seek assurances that any potential peace initiative will not bypass Ukraine. Berlin added that Wednesday’s agenda will cover possible frameworks for negotiations, territorial and security guarantees, and further measures to increase pressure on Moscow.
