Italian police have arrested Ukrainian national Serhii K. in the seaside town of Misano Adriatico, in the province of Rimini, acting on a European arrest warrant issued by Germany on 18 August. German federal prosecutors say he is suspected of coordinating the September 2022 explosions that crippled the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. According to a statement from the Office of the German Federal Prosecutor (GBA), investigators believe Serhii K. was part of a team that sailed from Rostock aboard the rented yacht “Andromeda”, using forged identity documents, and placed explosive charges near the Danish island of Bornholm. The devices detonated on 26 September 2022, causing severe damage to both pipelines, which run from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea. The suspect faces German charges of jointly causing an explosives blast, sabotage of constitutional infrastructure, and destruction of property. After his transfer from Italy, he is expected to appear before an investigating judge at Germany’s Federal Court of Justice while cross-border inquiries by German federal police and partner agencies continue.
