Russia launched a large overnight drone barrage on 5–6 August that set fire to a gas-pumping and metering station near Orlivka in Ukraine’s Odesa region, about one kilometre from the Romanian border. Ukraine’s energy ministry said “dozens” of Shahed-type drones struck the facility, a key node on the Trans-Balkan pipeline that has been moving liquefied natural gas imported from the United States and Azerbaijan. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called the strike a “deliberate” attempt to disrupt winter energy preparations; Kyiv reported damage to production equipment and a section of main pipeline but no casualties. Romania’s defence ministry said radar detected air targets close to its territory and scrambled two F-16s to monitor the situation, underscoring the risk of spill-over to NATO territory. Russia’s defence ministry later claimed the attack targeted Ukraine’s gas transport system that “supplies military facilities.” Elsewhere, Russian forces carried out at least 567 attacks across 16 settlements in southeastern Zaporizhzhia over the past 24 hours, Governor Ivan Fedorov said. Early-morning aerial bombs hit a recreation centre, killing two civilians and wounding 10—including four children—and damaging nine buildings, according to regional emergency services. Ukraine is responding with its own expanding drone campaign. The Security Service of Ukraine said a recent UAV strike on a Crimean airfield destroyed one Russian aircraft and damaged four others, while Russian state media claimed air defences downed 51 incoming Ukrainian drones overnight on 6 August. With stocks of surface-to-air missiles dwindling, Kyiv is increasingly fielding low-cost interceptor drones to defend cities and infrastructure, Reuters reported. Ukrainian officials also said components manufactured in India were found in downed Russian drones, highlighting the widening global supply chain feeding the intensifying drone war.
