Simon John Mariani, a 28-year-old investment banker from Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, died on Monday after being struck by lightning while competing in an all-day “Iron Man” golf tournament at Ballyowen Golf Club in Hardyston on 8 July, his family said. Mariani was on the 15th hole when the bolt struck at about 1:53 p.m., according to Hardyston police. His father administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while other golfers performed CPR until first responders arrived; he was airlifted to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries six days later. Crystal Springs Resort, which operates the course, said staff sounded weather horns as conditions deteriorated rapidly. Eyewitness Brian Delia, who recorded the approaching storm from the 14th hole, disputed hearing any warnings, highlighting questions over the effectiveness of the alert system. A 2019 University of Notre Dame graduate, Mariani worked as an associate at MTS Health Partners in New York. A wake is set for Thursday, with funeral services scheduled for Friday.
