Greece on Friday marked the 21st anniversary of its improbable Euro 2004 victory, when a header from Angelos Charisteas secured a 1–0 win over host nation Portugal in Lisbon and delivered the country’s first major football trophy. Commemorative articles and broadcasts recalled the underdog team led by coach Otto Rehhagel, while the Hellenic Football Federation released a statement from president Maki Gagatsis calling the triumph “a beacon of inspiration” that proved disciplined teamwork can achieve “what once seemed impossible.” Gagatsis said the federation aims to channel that legacy as the current squad pursues a “dynamic return to success” under coach Ivan Jovanović. The anniversary prompted fans to share memories of the 4 July 2004 final and the celebrations that filled Athens’ streets and the Panathenaic Stadium the following day. Although Greece has not replicated that success in subsequent tournaments, the Euro 2004 title remains widely regarded as one of international football’s greatest upsets.
