Italy reached their first UEFA Women’s European Championship semi-final in 28 years after defeating Norway 2–1 in Geneva on Wednesday. Captain Cristiana Girelli scored both goals, including a dramatic header in the 90th minute, to send the Azzurre through to the last four of Euro 2025, where they will meet either England or Sweden. The 35-year-old Juventus forward broke the deadlock five minutes after the interval, glancing in Sofia Cantore’s low cross. Norway appeared poised to level when Ada Hegerberg earned a penalty on the hour mark, but the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner dragged her effort wide—her second miss from the spot at these finals. Six minutes later Hegerberg redeemed herself, capitalising on a long pass from Maren Mjelde to equalise. Backed by a crowd of about 30,000 at the Stade de Genève, Italy pushed again and were rewarded when Cantore delivered another service from the left for Girelli, who headed beyond Cecilie Fiskerstrand to become the oldest goalscorer in a European quarter-final. The victory marks a major milestone for Andrea Soncin’s side, which had exited in the group stage at the previous two tournaments.
