Greece’s ruling New Democracy (ND) party used the 10th anniversary of the 5 July 2015 bailout referendum to renew its criticism of the left-wing Syriza government that organised the vote. In social-media posts and statements on Saturday, ND branded the plebiscite a “referendum of shame,” arguing that it split the country, forced the closure of banks and the imposition of capital controls, led to a third—“unnecessary”—bailout programme and saddled the economy with an estimated €100 billion in additional costs. Greek voters in 2015 rejected creditor-proposed austerity measures by a margin of 61% to 39%, but then-prime minister Alexis Tsipras accepted a rescue package with similar terms shortly afterwards to keep the country in the euro. The move deepened political fault lines that continue to shape Greek discourse over fiscal policy and the country’s place in the single currency. Marking the anniversary from the opposite camp, former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis hailed the referendum as a historic ‘No’ to what he calls ‘financial blackmail’, maintaining that the popular mandate was later betrayed. The contrasting messages underscore how the events of 2015 still influence domestic politics even as Greece, following years of recovery, has regained investment-grade status and posted its lowest unemployment rate in 17 years.
