Greece’s opposition PASOK party on Thursday called on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s New Democracy to publicly censure its lawmaker Dimitris Kalogeropoulos for what PASOK described as a sexist remark made on live television. During a heated ERT panel late Wednesday about the OPEKEPE farm-subsidy scandal, Kalogeropoulos told PASOK central-committee member Mara Koukoudaki, “Your husband’s a hero,” a comment the party said was intended to belittle her. In an official statement, PASOK said Greek society "stopped defining a woman’s position through her husband decades ago" and demanded an immediate condemnation from the governing party. New Democracy had not issued a response by early Thursday afternoon. The incident comes amid increased scrutiny of gendered language in Greek politics.
