Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday denounced what she called the “terrible misogyny” displayed by billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego in a series of social-media posts attacking journalists Sabina Berman, Vanessa Romero and Denise Dresser. Sheinbaum publicly expressed solidarity with the three women, saying such language toward any woman was unacceptable and pointing to a pattern of disrespect shown by the businessman. Salinas Pliego, chairman of Grupo Salinas and TV Azteca, replied in an open letter accusing the government of using him as a political distraction. He said the administration practices “selective solidarity,” questioned the president’s focus on his online comments rather than crime and femicide, and reiterated that the executive branch is pressuring courts over what he called unproven claims—including a disputed tax bill of more than 74 billion pesos (about US$4.2 billion). María Laura Medina, the entrepreneur’s wife, also issued a statement defending Salinas Pliego and arguing that gender should not shield critics from scrutiny. The exchange has reignited tensions between the presidency and one of Mexico’s highest-profile businessmen just weeks after the government signaled it would press ahead with efforts to collect the contested taxes.
