A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that ultra-processed foods constitute the majority of calorie intake in the United States, accounting for approximately 53% of calories consumed by adults and 62% by children. These foods, which include grain-based desserts such as cookies, cakes, and pies, remain the primary source of calories in the average American diet. Despite national healthy-eating guidelines, consumption of ultra-processed foods may hinder weight loss efforts, as indicated by studies highlighting their impact on body fat reduction. The prevalence of ultra-processed food consumption in the U.S. surpasses that of other countries, with adult diets comprising 58% of such foods compared to 57% in the U.K. and lower percentages in countries like Australia, South Africa, and Mexico. Health organizations including the American Heart Association and the Make America Healthy Again Commission advise against the consumption of ultra-processed foods due to their potential negative health effects.
