YouTube star Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson has drawn global attention with a new video chronicling a friend’s six-month bid to shed 100 pounds for a US$250,000 reward. Posted on 21 June, the 26-minute film surpassed 80 million views within two days, underscoring the reach of the world’s most-followed creator. The challenge placed participant Majd Khader in a bespoke training facility stocked with exercise equipment and pre-selected meals. Khader met the target in 178 days and ultimately received about US$417,000, reflecting incremental bonuses disclosed in the video. He later donated US$10,000 to a fund for the family of his coach. That coach, 38-year-old personal trainer Tyler Wall, died on 18 February, roughly 80 days into filming. A death certificate obtained by several outlets lists the cause as accidental mitragynine toxicity, a compound found in the herbal substance kratom. Wall’s family authorised the footage to be released, saying he would have wanted his message of “hope and positivity” shared. The fatality has sparked fresh scrutiny of kratom’s safety and of the safeguards surrounding high-profile online stunts. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned that kratom can carry opioid-like risks, it remains legal in most states. MrBeast has not commented beyond tributes in the video description, but the episode has renewed debate over the responsibilities of influencers whose content blurs entertainment with extreme personal challenges.
