Turkish reality-TV personality and social-media influencer Nihal Candan died on 26 June at the age of 30 from complications linked to anorexia nervosa, according to statements by her sister and multiple local media outlets. Candan weighed about 22 kg after losing roughly 40 kg in the past two years; Turkish news site Insight reported that she suffered cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment. Candan rose to prominence on the fashion competition programme “Bu Tarz Benim” and built an online audience exceeding one million followers. Her health deteriorated sharply after she and her sister were arrested in 2023 on fraud and money-laundering allegations; she was released early this year because of her medical condition. The Federation of Turkish Women’s Associations said Candan’s death “once again reveals that the pressures and imposed aesthetic norms reproduced by the media can reach lethal levels,” urging a national debate on body-image standards and gender inequality. Eating-disorder specialists warn that Turkey, like many other countries, lacks adequate resources for early diagnosis and treatment of anorexia, which has one of the highest mortality rates among psychiatric illnesses.
