An Indian Army doctor on leave intervened to deliver a baby girl at Virangana Laxmibai Jhansi railway station after a passenger from the Panvel–Gorakhpur Express went into advanced labour on 5 July. Major Bachwala Rohit, 31, who is posted at Military Hospital Jhansi, noticed the woman in distress while waiting for his own train and immediately took charge. Working with limited supplies, the doctor fashioned an impromptu delivery suite on the platform. He used hair clips to clamp the umbilical cord, a pocket knife to cut it and a dhoti provided by railway staff to maintain hygiene, while women employees cordoned off the area for privacy. Mother and child were stabilised and transferred by ambulance to a local hospital, where both were declared in good condition. The Indian Army said Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi has formally commended Major Rohit for “exceptional professional acumen and selfless commitment beyond the call of duty.” North Central Railway credited the swift response to an alert raised through its Rail Madad app and said the episode highlights the importance of trained first responders at crowded transport hubs.
