A 7-month-old girl who was inside a car stolen from a gas station on Chicago’s West Side was rescued unharmed after the thief abandoned her on the steps of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Little Italy, authorities said. The vehicle was taken the morning of July 3 from a pump in the 1200 block of South Independence Boulevard while the child’s mother stood nearby. Earl Abernathy, a 33-year-old high-school counselor and basketball coach, heard the infant crying as he sat in traffic near the church with his windows down on a day when temperatures neared 90°F. Abernathy pulled over, found the overturned car seat on the church steps, called 911 and stayed with the child until police arrived. The baby was examined at a hospital and reunited with her family in good condition. Chicago police later arrested 38-year-old Jeremy Ochoa, who faces multiple felony counts including motor-vehicle theft and child endangerment. Investigators said Ochoa dumped the infant once he realized she was in the back seat. The inquiry is continuing.
