At least four workers were killed when a 10-foot-deep trench being dug for the Chambal drinking-water pipeline collapsed in Bharatpur district, Rajasthan, on Sunday morning. Local officials said the soil caved in at Jangi ka Nagla village, burying a mixed group of labourers who had entered the pit to collect earth. Emergency crews, backed by earth-moving machines, pulled seven people from the debris and rushed the injured to RBM Hospital. District authorities estimate that up to 11 people have been hurt and several others may still be trapped as the rescue operation continues. District Collector Qamar Chaudhary and Superintendent of Police Mridul Kachhava visited the hospital to monitor treatment and gather statements. The administration has ordered an inquiry into whether safety protocols were followed during the excavation work, which forms part of a state-run water-supply project.
