Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on 16 July posted two photographs on Facebook—one showing Kanwar Yatra devotees occupying a road and another of people offering namaz—captioned, “One country, two laws?”. The comment questioned what he said was unequal enforcement of public-order rules during Hindu and Muslim religious gatherings. The Bharatiya Janata Party condemned the post within hours. Madhya Pradesh minister Vishvas Kailash Sarang called Singh “Maulana Digvijaya” and accused him of habitually attacking Sanatan Hindu traditions to court Muslim voters. Other BJP figures demanded that Singh apologise for spreading what they termed “fake news” and inflaming communal sentiment. Congress colleagues defended the veteran politician, saying he was reiterating the Constitution’s guarantee of equal treatment regardless of faith and urging dialogue to manage large public events. The row adds to the politically charged atmosphere surrounding this year’s Kanwar Yatra, when millions of Shiva devotees walk or drive in processions across northern India.
