The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its investigation into illegal online betting apps in India, questioning several prominent cricketers and actors over their alleged promotion of these platforms. Notable figures questioned include former cricketers Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, and Suresh Raina, as well as actors Sonu Sood and Urvashi Rautela. The probe highlights that endorsements of illegal betting apps have caused an estimated annual loss of 27,000 crore rupees. The ED's charges against the promoters encompass violations of the Information Technology Act, Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Act, Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting advisories. The investigation also revealed that advertisements for these betting apps appeared on the front pages of major publications, with payments running into crores. In a related development, the ED has registered a case against 29 celebrities, including South Indian film stars Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Lakshmi Manchu, Nidhi Agarwal, and Srimukhi, for their alleged involvement in a Rs 284-crore betting app scam. The Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) filed covers actors, television hosts, social media influencers, and YouTubers, all accused of promoting illegal betting applications in breach of the Public Gambling Act. This crackdown represents a broadening of the ED's efforts to curb illegal betting activities facilitated through celebrity endorsements across India's entertainment and sports sectors.
