Kunwar Anand Singh, a four-term Lok Sabha member from Gonda and a former agriculture minister in the Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government, died in Lucknow after his health suddenly deteriorated, family sources said. He was 87. Born on 4 January 1939 into the erstwhile Mankapur royal family, Singh entered electoral politics in the 1960s and was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly three times before winning Parliament seats in 1971, 1980, 1984 and 1989. Known locally as the “UP Tiger,” he retained considerable influence in eastern Uttar Pradesh, returning to state politics in 2012 to win the Gaura constituency and join the cabinet. Singh is survived by his son, Kirti Vardhan Singh—currently Minister of State for External Affairs, Forest and Environment—and three daughters. Political leaders across party lines, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, offered condolences, marking the passing of a significant figure in Uttar Pradesh’s post-independence political landscape.
