An overnight cloudburst drenched Gurugram with 133 millimetres of rain in the 12 hours to 7 a.m. Thursday, including an intense 103-millimetre burst that fell in just 90 minutes, according to the District Disaster Management Authority. The India Meteorological Department maintained an orange alert for the National Capital Region, warning of additional spells of moderate rain and thunderstorms over the next two days. The deluge inundated major arteries such as National Highway-48 and Golf Course Extension Road, paralysing traffic and leaving vehicles stranded in chest-deep water. A section of the Southern Peripheral Road collapsed, creating an estimated 40-foot-deep crater into which a truck carrying alcohol plunged; the driver and helper escaped unharmed. Separately, authorities confirmed five deaths linked to the storm, three of them caused by electrocution. To ease congestion and allow emergency crews to clear flooded streets, the Gurugram district administration asked all corporate offices and private institutions to allow staff to work from home on 10 July. Municipal teams said pumping equipment was operating at full capacity but drains were overwhelmed by the volume of runoff. Officials urged residents to avoid non-essential travel while clean-up operations continue.
