Relentless monsoon rain across Himachal Pradesh has killed at least 78 people and left 37 others missing since 20 June, according to provisional tallies from the State Disaster Management Authority. Most fatalities were reported in Mandi district, which was hit by a series of flash floods and cloudbursts, including one in Thunag’s Seraj Valley that local officials say claimed 14 lives and left 31 missing. The downpours have triggered 23 flash floods, 19 cloudbursts and 16 landslides, blocking 269 roads statewide—about 200 in Mandi alone—and damaging bridges, farmland and homes. Power and water networks are badly affected, with 285 transformers and 278 water-supply schemes out of service. Engineers warn of an acute drinking-water shortage in Thunag after pipes and pumping equipment were swept away. State authorities estimate public- and private-sector losses at more than Rs 57 crore. National and State Disaster Response Force teams are searching for the missing and clearing debris, while the Governor has dispatched truckloads of relief material to isolated villages. The Deputy Chief Minister said restoration of roads, electricity and water lines is under way, but warned that unstable slopes and blocked rivers continue to pose risk. The India Meteorological Department has maintained an orange alert for very heavy rainfall through 9 July and advised residents to stay away from rivers and slide-prone hillsides. Neighbouring Uttarakhand is also bracing for trouble: the Geological Survey of India has issued a landslide alert for Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Tehri districts as moisture-laden clouds move further east.
