India's Union Cabinet has approved four new semiconductor manufacturing projects with a total investment of approximately 4,594 crore rupees (around 45.94 billion rupees) across the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab. This approval expands the India Semiconductor Mission's portfolio to ten projects, following six previously sanctioned units. Two of the new factories will be established in Odisha, while Andhra Pradesh and Punjab will each host one. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that construction on all four plants will commence soon, reflecting the government's commitment to boosting domestic chip production and strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India campaign and aims to support clean growth and digital innovation. Additionally, the Cabinet approved a 700 MW Tato II hydroelectric power project with an investment of 8,146 crore rupees, further supporting infrastructure development. Industry leaders and political representatives from the involved states have welcomed the decision, highlighting its potential to enhance local manufacturing capabilities and skill development. India's electronics manufacturing sector has also seen rapid growth, with the country becoming the leading smartphone supplier to the US and the electronics market valued at 12 lakh crore rupees.
