Starlink, the satellite-internet unit of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has secured authorisation from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to offer commercial services in the country, ending a regulatory process that began in 2022. The five-year licence, awarded to the company’s locally incorporated Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited, is valid until 7 July 2030 or the end of Starlink’s first-generation constellation. The clearance makes Starlink the third player approved to enter India’s satellite-broadband market after Eutelsat’s OneWeb and Reliance Jio. IN-SPACe’s decision allows Starlink to deploy its 4,408-satellite Gen-1 low-Earth-orbit network—capable of delivering roughly 600 Gbps of capacity over India—but the company must still obtain operating spectrum from the Department of Telecommunications, build at least three gateway stations and complete security trials overseen by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Gaining access to the world’s second-largest internet market gives Starlink a potential foothold among underserved rural users and enterprise customers, while intensifying competition with OneWeb, Jio and Amazon’s yet-to-be-licensed Project Kuiper in India’s emerging satellite-communications sector.
