The Income Tax Department of India has launched a nationwide crackdown targeting bogus claims of deductions in tax returns for the assessment year 2025-26. This operation includes multi-city raids on approximately 150 sites suspected of facilitating fake income tax return filings. Taxpayers are advised to be cautious while filing ITR-2 and ITR-3 forms to avoid common mistakes and scrutiny, especially concerning political donations, medical claims, rental income, and capital gains from mutual funds. The department's efforts come amid improvements in the tax refund process, which now delivers refunds in an average of 17 days, a significant acceleration from previous years. Refunds issued have also increased substantially from ₹0.83 lakh crore in 2014 to ₹4.77 lakh crore in 2025.
