India vice-captain and first-choice wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant left the field on the opening day of the third Test at Lord’s after a ball struck the tip of his left index finger during the 34th over of England’s first innings. The Board of Control for Cricket in India said Pant is under medical supervision and receiving treatment. Reserve keeper Dhruv Jurel donned the gloves from the 35th over and continued behind the stumps for the remainder of the session. Under International Cricket Council regulations, a substitute is allowed to keep wicket for an injured player but cannot bat in that player’s place, meaning Pant will need to return to the crease if he is to take part in India’s first innings. Pant’s fitness is critical for India. The 27-year-old has scored 342 runs, including two centuries, in the series so far and provides experienced on-field guidance for India’s bowlers. Any prolonged absence would force India to reshuffle both their batting order and wicketkeeping plans for the remainder of the five-match series.
