India vice-captain Rishabh Pant drew laughter and surprise on Day 4 of the second Test at Edgbaston when his bat slipped from his hands and sailed towards square leg while he attempted an aggressive stroke off seamer Josh Tongue. The ball missed the bat and carried through to the wicketkeeper; the stray willow was quickly retrieved without injury or delay. Pant’s brief interruption did little to slow India’s momentum. The visitors reached lunch on 177 for 3, extending their overall lead to 357 runs. Pant was unbeaten on a brisk 41 from 19 deliveries, striking five fours and two sixes, while captain Shubman Gill was 24 not out. Earlier in the session, England removed overnight batters Karun Nair for 26 and KL Rahul for 55, but failed to stem the scoring rate.
