InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., the operator of IndiGo, said its board has approved the appointment of Amitabh Kant as a non-executive director. The former NITI Aayog chief executive and India’s recent G20 Sherpa will join the board once he secures mandatory security clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the company’s shareholders ratify the move. Kant, a 1980-batch IAS officer, is credited with national initiatives such as ‘Make in India’, ‘Startup India’ and the “Incredible India” tourism campaign. IndiGo chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said Kant’s policy and infrastructure experience would strengthen the carrier’s push to build international hubs as it broadens its global network. The low-cost airline controls more than 60% of India’s domestic market and has recently launched non-stop services to Africa, Central Asia and Europe. For the March quarter, IndiGo reported a 62% year-on-year jump in net profit to ₹3,067.5 crore on revenue of ₹22,152 crore. The stock closed 3% lower at ₹5,771 in Mumbai trading on Thursday.
