The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) has rejected the Pune Police's plea to try the 17-year-old accused in the 2024 Pune Porsche crash case as an adult. The board ruled that the accused will be tried under juvenile provisions, stating that the case does not qualify as a heinous crime under the Supreme Court's definition. The incident involved a minor driving under the influence of alcohol, resulting in the deaths of two victims, Ashwini and Aneesh Awadhiya. The decision has sparked reactions from victims' families, with Ashwini's father and mother expressing dissatisfaction over the accused being treated as a minor. Legal experts and child rights activists have highlighted that the applicable charge is under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years. Meanwhile, the Pune Police have indicated plans to challenge the JJB's order in the High Court. Separately, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) delegation met with the Election Commission of India (ECI) in New Delhi, led by State President Palla Srinivasa Rao and MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu. The TDP submitted seven suggestions aimed at strengthening electoral roll management and enhancing transparency in the electoral process. Key recommendations included conducting annual third-party audits under the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), initiating the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Andhra Pradesh early, and ensuring that voter deletions are based on reasoned orders. The TDP also sought procedural clarity to prevent wrongful deletions and urged the ECI to clarify that voter roll revision is distinct from citizenship verification. These proposals come amid political debates over electoral roll revisions in poll-bound Bihar, with the TDP's suggestions echoing concerns raised by opposition parties.
