A special court in Karnataka has sentenced Kannada film actor Ranya Rao to one year in prison after finding her guilty in a gold-smuggling case. Investigators alleged that Rao helped move undeclared gold through Kempegowda International Airport, violating customs regulations. Separately, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has invoked the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act against the actor. An Advisory Board has endorsed the COFEPOSA detention order, effectively barring Rao from securing bail for the next 12 months. Rao is the latest Sandalwood personality to face criminal penalties linked to smuggling and illicit trade. Authorities said additional probes into possible accomplices remain open.
