Maharashtra’s Kalyan police on 14 July arrested Lingaraj Kanni, a Congress leader from Kalaburagi and close associate of Karnataka Information Technology Minister Priyank Kharge, on charges of drug possession and trafficking. Officers said Kanni was detained in Thane district while allegedly attempting to sell narcotic substances. Investigators seized 120 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup that is banned under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. A case has been registered at Kalyan police station, and the accused was remanded in custody for further questioning. The arrest has sparked political controversy in Karnataka, where opposition figures have criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s administration and demanded that Kharge clarify his links to the aide. Kharge has not yet publicly commented on the case.
