A video circulating on social media shows Indian Premier League founder Lalit Modi and liquor-to-aviation tycoon Vijay Mallya singing Frank Sinatra’s “I Did It My Way” at a lavish party in London. Modi hosted the summer gala, attended by about 310 guests including former West Indies cricket captain Chris Gayle, according to posts that accompanied the footage. Both businessmen remain outside India while fighting legal proceedings. Modi, who left the country in 2010, faces allegations of bid-rigging, money laundering and violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act linked to the IPL. Mallya, declared a fugitive economic offender in 2019, is contesting India’s bid to extradite him over accusations that he wilfully defaulted on loans exceeding Rs 9,000 crore taken for his defunct Kingfisher Airlines. The public appearance of the two high-profile fugitives underscores the lengthy legal battles New Delhi continues to wage in British courts to bring them back to stand trial.
