Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing to travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly in late September and is expected to seek a bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to multiple Indian media reports cited by Reuters and the Indian Express on 13 August. The encounter would be their second this year, following Modi’s White House visit in February. Indian officials say the main purpose of the proposed talks is to resolve a widening trade rift after Trump this month ordered an extra 25% tariff on Indian goods—on top of existing reciprocal duties—raising the effective levy to as much as 50%. Washington is pressing New Delhi to open its agriculture and dairy markets and to curb purchases of Russian crude, issues that have stalled negotiations on a broader trade agreement. Sources added that, if the New York meeting goes well, Modi could invite Trump to India for a Quadrilateral Security Dialogue summit in October. Modi is also weighing separate discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the UNGA sidelines, the officials said.
