Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a telephone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 11 August, urging New Delhi to back tighter restrictions on Russian oil exports. Zelenskyy told Modi that limiting Moscow’s energy revenues is critical to weakening Russia’s ability to finance its war in Ukraine, according to readouts from Kyiv and media reports. Modi thanked Zelenskyy for sharing his assessment of recent developments and reiterated India’s long-standing position that the conflict must be resolved through dialogue and a peaceful settlement. He added that India remains ready to “make every possible contribution” toward ending the war and is committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Ukraine. The two leaders agreed to stay in contact and meet in person on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York next month. Zelenskyy’s outreach to India follows similar calls with other non-Western partners as Kyiv seeks broader support ahead of high-level talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin later this week.
