India’s National Investigation Agency on 5 July arrested two alleged members of the so-called “US Donkey Route” human-trafficking network during coordinated searches in Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. The agency identified the suspects as Sunny alias Sunny Donker of Dharamshala in Kangra district and Shubham Sandhal alias Deep Hundi of Ropar. Investigators say Sunny facilitated the illegal transit of Indian migrants through the circuitous ‘donkey route’, while Sandhal managed fund transfers to associates in Latin America. Both men are described as close associates of Gagandeep, the alleged mastermind already in custody. The arrests are part of an expanding probe into rackets that arrange perilous overland passages to the United States for hefty fees.
