The Telangana government has renamed the Hyderabad-based Annapurna Canteens as 'Indiramma Canteens' in honor of Indira Gandhi, expanding the scheme to include breakfast services. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy defended the renaming, stating that Indira Gandhi's welfare and development schemes continue to benefit the poor and justified naming the canteens after her. However, his remarks intensified the dispute when he said that those who do not appreciate Indira Gandhi's greatness should be 'stripped and thrashed,' prompting widespread backlash from opposition leaders, including BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, who condemned the language as inappropriate and disrespectful. The controversy also recalls historical grievances related to the Emergency period under Indira Gandhi's leadership, which some political figures referenced in their criticisms.
