N. Ramchander Rao has been appointed as the new president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Telangana state unit, succeeding Union Minister G Kishan Reddy. Rao, a former Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) with roots in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), took charge officially in early July 2025. His appointment was welcomed by senior BJP leaders and followed a formal handover ceremony in Hyderabad. Rao faces the challenge of managing internal factions within the Telangana BJP. Concurrently, the Telangana state cabinet approved a 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections, amending the Panchayat Raj Act to implement this quota across all levels. This decision has drawn mixed reactions: BJP Telangana president Ramchander Rao criticized it as misleading to BC communities, while leaders from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Congress welcomed the move. The BRS spokesperson highlighted legal concerns, noting that similar quotas in other states were struck down by the Supreme Court, suggesting the ordinance may be politically motivated. The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief expressed commitment to contest local body polls under the new reservation policy.

BRS Spokesperson M. Krishank told India Today that the 42% BC reservation in local body elections is a serious matter of legal sanctity. Many states have done the same, and the Supreme Court has rejected their ordinances. This appears to be appeasement or an attempt to deceive https://t.co/ykWbc6FOMy
