President Donald Trump said he will "substantially" raise tariffs on goods imported from India, warning that the new, higher rate will be announced within the next 24 hours. In a series of social-media posts on Monday and Tuesday, Trump accused New Delhi of buying "massive amounts" of discounted Russian oil, refining it and re-exporting the products for profit, thereby helping to finance Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The president did not specify the new duty, but his threat comes on top of a 25% tariff he imposed in July and follows earlier talk of levies as high as 100% on countries that continue energy trade with Russia. Trump also signalled broader protectionist moves, saying separate tariffs on pharmaceuticals and semiconductors will start small but could rise to as much as 150–250% within a year. India’s foreign ministry dismissed the U.S. escalation as "unjustified and unreasonable" and said it would take all necessary steps to safeguard its national interests and economic security. Two Indian officials told Reuters the country intends to keep buying Russian crude despite U.S. pressure. India has become the largest seaborne buyer of Russian crude, importing roughly 1.75 million barrels a day between January and June, according to tanker-tracking data. Traders say some Indian refiners have recently paused purchases while they gauge the impact of Washington’s next move, and discounts on Russian barrels have narrowed to around $2 a barrel from levels above $15 last year. The threatened tariff hike adds fresh strain to U.S.–India trade talks and underscores Washington’s effort to tighten economic screws on Moscow. Analysts warn the dispute could complicate the wider strategic partnership the two governments have tried to cultivate in the Indo-Pacific.
