The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on 19 Aug warned consumers not to eat, sell or serve three lots of Great Value brand raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart after tests found the radioactive isotope Cesium-137 in shipping containers and a product sample. The affected shrimp, imported from Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods), had been distributed between 17 July and 8 Aug to Walmart stores in 13 states including Florida, Texas and Pennsylvania. Walmart has removed the products, which carry lot codes 8005538-1, 8005539-1 and 8005540-1 with a best-by date of 15 March 2027. U.S. Customs and Border Protection first flagged the contamination at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Savannah, prompting the FDA to place BMS Foods on an import alert that bars additional seafood shipments until the company addresses possible sanitation lapses. The agency said the Cs-137 level detectedâabout 68 becquerels per kilogramâfalls well below the 1,200 Bq/kg federal intervention threshold but still justifies a recall because prolonged, low-dose exposure can heighten cancer risk. On 21 Aug the FDA broadened the investigation after California-based Southwind Foods voluntarily recalled 13 lots of frozen shrimp distributed under the Sand Bar, Arctic Shores, Best Yet, Great American and First Street labels. Those products went to retailers and wholesalers in nine states, from Arizona and Washington to Massachusetts and Virginia, during the same 17 July-8 Aug shipping window. No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported. The FDA urges consumers to discard or return any recalled shrimp and to contact a medical provider with health concerns. The agency said it continues to trace shipments and is working with Indonesian regulators to pinpoint the source of the contamination.
