Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva hosted his Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto in Brasília on 9 July, capping the latter’s trip to the 17th BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro. The visit was Indonesia’s first at head-of-state level since it became a full BRICS member in January. The two leaders signed five cooperation agreements covering defence, sanitary surveillance, mutual legal assistance, education and other areas. Lula said Brazil supports Indonesia’s application to join the BRICS-backed New Development Bank and pledged to lead a business delegation to Jakarta later this year. Bilateral trade reached US$6.34 billion in 2024, and Lula promised to ease Brazilian beef exports to help improve Indonesian food security. On geopolitical issues, both presidents reiterated calls for dialogue to end the war in Ukraine and backed recognition of a Palestinian state as part of efforts to halt the conflict in Gaza. Lula signalled he may attend the ASEAN summit in Malaysia in October, when he could make a return visit to Indonesia at Subianto’s invitation. Neither leader mentioned the recent death of Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins on Indonesia’s Mount Rinjani, a case that has drawn public attention in Brazil.
