On August 13, 2025, thousands of residents in Pati Regency, Central Java, held large-scale protests demanding the resignation of Regent Sudewo following his policy to increase the Land and Building Tax (PBB-P2) by up to 250 percent. Despite Sudewo's subsequent retraction of the tax hike and public apology, the demonstrations escalated into violent clashes. Protesters attempted to breach the Regent's office and the DPRD building, throwing bottles and hundreds of mineral water cups at police, who responded by deploying tear gas. Sudewo was evacuated from his office in a tactical police vehicle but refused to step down, asserting he was elected by the people and pledging to improve governance. The DPRD agreed to initiate a special committee and an inquiry (hak angket) for Sudewo's impeachment amid the unrest. The protests resulted in 64 injuries, with six individuals requiring hospitalization. Authorities arrested 11 provocateurs linked to the violence. The unrest also drew attention to allegations of Sudewo receiving illicit funds related to a DJKA project corruption case. Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi emphasized that any removal of Sudewo must follow DPRD procedures, while the Indonesian House of Representatives' Deputy Chair from the Gerindra faction, Bahtra Banong, acknowledged prior warnings to Sudewo and awaited DPRD's decision on the impeachment process. The protests featured unique elements such as community support activities and the use of the "One Piece" pirate flag symbolizing resistance. Post-demonstration, joint security forces conducted cleanup operations around the protest sites.
