Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said Damascus is in the advanced stages of U.S.-mediated negotiations with Israel aimed at updating the 1974 disengagement accord and establishing new security arrangements along their shared frontier. Israeli media reports indicate the draft framework would create demilitarised zones on the Golan Heights, bar deployment of strategic weapons inside Syria and restrict foreign support for rebuilding Syrian forces. Officials in both capitals have not disclosed a signing date, but al-Sharaa described the deal as increasingly likely. The talks come as Washington recalibrates its Syria policy. The U.S. Treasury on 25 August formally removed Syria from its sanctions list, and Special Envoy Thomas Barrack travelled to Damascus after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to facilitate the negotiations. A bipartisan congressional delegation led by Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Joe Wilson also met al-Sharaa in Damascus, underscoring growing U.S. engagement. Syria’s foreign ministry welcomed the sanctions relief, calling it a positive step toward regional stability.
