A 17-year-old boy named Riccardo Boni died after being buried alive in a sand tunnel he had dug on a beach in Montalto di Castro, near Rome, Italy. The incident occurred while he was playing with his younger brothers. The sand tunnel, approximately 1.5 meters deep, collapsed on him, causing suffocation. Despite frantic efforts by his father and bystanders who dug for about 40 minutes to rescue him, Riccardo was found dead. The boy did not have time to scream as the sand trapped him.
