A fatal collision occurred on July 14, 2025, inside the Base tunnel on the A1 motorway near Barberino del Mugello, Florence province, involving a truck and a car. Initially, three people died at the scene, and two others were seriously injured, including a four-year-old girl named Summer and her mother. The motorway section along the Variante di Valico was closed, causing long traffic delays. Tragically, the young girl Summer succumbed to her injuries the following day at the Meyer Hospital in Florence. The three initial fatalities were identified as Summer's grandparents and maternal aunt. Summer's mother remains in intensive care at Careggi Hospital in critical condition.
