A 14-year-old boy has died from head injuries sustained while swimming in the River Bernesga near La Seca de Alba, in the municipality of Cuadros, León. The accident occurred on the afternoon of 5 July in a hard-to-reach section of the river by kilometre 10 of the LE-4514 road. Emergency service 112 Castilla y León mobilised the Guardia Civil, León firefighters, a rescue helicopter and a medical helicopter; the boy was stabilised at the scene and air-lifted to Hospital de León with severe cranial trauma. The hospital confirmed the teenager’s death on 6 July. The Cuadros town council has declared three days of official mourning, ordering flags to fly at half-mast and extending condolences to the family and local residents.
