A truck refuelling an Eni-branded petrol, diesel and liquefied-petroleum-gas station on Via dei Gordiani in Rome’s Prenestino district ruptured a gas pipe shortly after 8 a.m. on Friday, triggering a leak, a fire and two consecutive explosions that were heard across the Italian capital and sent a plume of black smoke high above the skyline. The regional fire brigade said at least 45 people were injured, among them 24 civilians, 12 police officers, six firefighters and three ambulance personnel who had responded to an earlier alert about the leak. Two victims are on life support with extensive burns; a further six remain in critical care. No fatalities have been reported. Fifteen firefighting teams contained the blaze, which spread to an adjacent depot and shattered windows in nearby buildings. Three residential blocks and a youth sports centre were evacuated; city officials closed the Teano stop on Metro Line C as a precaution. Rome prosecutors have opened an investigation into the accident. Initial findings point to a malfunction during the unloading of LPG from the tanker truck. Engineers are checking the structural integrity of surrounding buildings and monitoring air quality for residual gas and soot. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, who visited the site, said municipal welfare points have been set up for displaced residents. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she is following developments closely, while Pope Leo XIV offered prayers for the injured.
