A late-night car crash in Herriman, Utah, ignited a gas-fed explosion that levelled several businesses in a strip mall and sent three people to hospital. Police said an SUV involved in a three-vehicle collision veered off 13400 South near 5200 West around 11 p.m. Saturday, slammed into a Domino’s Pizza outlet and ruptured an underground gas line. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators shows the vehicle running a red light seconds before impact. The ruptured line exploded minutes later, blowing the roof off the restaurant and gutting adjacent Jimmy John’s and Supercuts stores. Two bystanders pulled the SUV’s driver and a passenger clear moments before the blast, according to the Unified Fire Authority. No fatalities or injuries to first responders were reported. More than 60 firefighters from six departments fought the blaze and ordered residents within a one-mile radius to evacuate while crews shut off the leaking gas. The evacuation was lifted at 1:05 a.m. Sunday after the fire was contained, but 13400 South remains closed as structural engineers assess the badly damaged building. Riverton Police, which is leading the investigation because the initial collision began in its city limits, has not yet determined why the driver failed to stop at the light. In the aftermath, Herriman officials urged residents to enrol in the region’s opt-in emergency alert system after some neighbours reported missing the evacuation notice.
