Authorities in Hokkaido have confirmed through DNA analysis that the brown bear culled on August 15 near Mount Rausu in Shari Town was the same individual that attacked and killed a man in his 20s from Tokyo on August 14. The bear, identified as the mother in a group of three bears culled, was linked to the victim by DNA found on the victim's clothing. The victim was reportedly running alone shortly before the attack, which likely occurred near a blind curve on the mountain trail. Despite the culling of the attacking bear, sightings of bears unafraid of humans have continued in the Mount Rausu area. In related incidents, a man was injured in a bear attack in Okutama Town, Tokyo, and a 70-year-old man in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, sustained injuries to his left shoulder and wrist after a bear encounter. Experts have raised concerns about the ineffectiveness of some bear deterrent sprays, emphasizing the importance of reliable safety measures when encountering bears. Additionally, a body wearing snow boots was found in the Jigokudani crater area of Mount Asahi, with investigations ongoing to determine identity and cause of death.
